FIRST IN SCORE — WAY DOWN BALLOT — Way to Win, the progressive women-led donor group that usually focuses on flipping the southwestern United States for Democrats, has quietly given $4 million to political nonprofits in Virginia this year to help Democrats in the next week’s legislative election, the group tells POLITICO’s Maggie Severns. Close to $1 million of those funds were donated in the last month, after Democrats in the commonwealth identified an extra need. Way to Win did not identify all of the groups that received its funding — and does most of its work through political nonprofits, or so-called “dark money” groups that don’t disclose the sources of their funding — but said that large chunks of money have flowed through New Virginia Majority, an organization focused on getting out the vote in low-income areas and communities of color.
Big-name Democrats who participate in Way to Win and contributed include Susan Pritzker, a philanthropist and member of the wealthy Pritzker family, and Joan Huffer, a Virginia-based donor and activist who is also a member of the Democracy Alliance.
